The Sleep Diet

While any Diet titled the Sleep Diet may sound like a dream come true. It might not be quite that easy.

Research has shown that getting a good night’s sleep every night, and on a regular schedule, keeps your body healthy. our body also continues to burn calories throughout the night while you sleep; which in fact is good for weight loss to a certain extent. After all, when you sleep you aren’t taking in any calories but still burning them off.

While some reports for the “diet” suggests that people should sleep upwards of 10 hours a night, doctors say the average person should sleep 6-9 hours a night depending on their body. As with most diets, effects may differ for each person so you should try it out and figure out what amount of hours of sleep work for you.

At the least, getting enough sleep at night will leave you with the energy to battle hunger cravings and maybe even a trip to the gym.

Red Dress Day: The top 5 foods to Lower Cholesteral

the American Heart Association is promoting today as Red Dress day and seeks to raise awareness of heart disease, the #1 killer of women in the US. Staying with that theme, here are the top 5 foods to lower your Cholesterol and keep your heart healthy:

Oatmeal and oat bran
Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad” cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes.

Soluble fiber appears to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines. Ten grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you’ll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran.

Walnuts and almonds

Studies have shown that walnuts can significantly reduce blood cholesterol. Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy and elastic. Almonds appear to have a similar effect, resulting in a marked improvement within just four weeks.

Fish and omega-3 fatty acids

Research has supported the cholesterol-lowering benefits of eating fatty fish because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids also help the heart in other ways such as reducing blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. In people who have already had heart attacks, fish oil — or omega-3 fatty acids — significantly reduces the risk of sudden death. Doctors recommend eating at least two servings of fish a week. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon.
