The 5 Factor Diet

Another day, another fad diet. Today’s diet is the 5 Factor Diet This is one you may have seen in many publications like US magazine because of the many celebrities that seem to follow this regime. The man behind this plan is Harley Pasternak. Harley is responsible for getting many of Hollywood’s most recognized celebrities into the best shape of their lives, from Jessica Simpson to Kanye West and Eva Mendes to John Mayer.

According to the source: The 5-Factor Diet was originally created for celebrities. Harley was challenged to create brief (yet incredibly effective) workouts for actors, while training them during their short breaks on movie sets. In addition, he needed to create healthy meals in a matter of minutes (literally), using simple ingredients (the fewer the better) that could fit in the mini fridge on a set. Harley’s clients were eating five times a day, cutting the length of their workouts, and transforming their bodies!

For more detailed information on the Diet check out the website.

Getting in Shape with your Wii and Jillian Michaels

If anyone can get you in shape, it’s Jillian Michaels. Not only does she have rock hard abs and can scare you into running a mile or 10, she also knows a thing or two about weight loss. That is why, if you are using the Wii to get fit, I would guess any program approved by Jillian Michaels has to have some benefit to your weight loss goals. The Biggest Loser trainer teamed up with Nintendo to create her workout for Wii Fit called Jillian Michaels’ Fitness Ultimatum 2009 ($37).

She’s targeting kids by making the game fun and interactive, complete with cool graphics, but it’s something the whole family can use. Jillian says eventually you can burn 300 to 400 calories an hour doing things like kickboxing, running, and squats.

The Sleep Diet

While any Diet titled the Sleep Diet may sound like a dream come true. It might not be quite that easy.

Research has shown that getting a good night’s sleep every night, and on a regular schedule, keeps your body healthy. our body also continues to burn calories throughout the night while you sleep; which in fact is good for weight loss to a certain extent. After all, when you sleep you aren’t taking in any calories but still burning them off.

While some reports for the “diet” suggests that people should sleep upwards of 10 hours a night, doctors say the average person should sleep 6-9 hours a night depending on their body. As with most diets, effects may differ for each person so you should try it out and figure out what amount of hours of sleep work for you.

At the least, getting enough sleep at night will leave you with the energy to battle hunger cravings and maybe even a trip to the gym.

The first step to sleeping well is your environment so make sure to have a comfy mattress. Check out this review of the Sleep Number Bed by jmbasilio:

Red Dress Day: The top 5 foods to Lower Cholesteral

the American Heart Association is promoting today as Red Dress day and seeks to raise awareness of heart disease, the #1 killer of women in the US. Staying with that theme, here are the top 5 foods to lower your Cholesterol and keep your heart healthy:

Oatmeal and oat bran
Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad” cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes.

Soluble fiber appears to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines. Ten grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you’ll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran.

Quaker Steel Cut Oats

Walnuts and almonds

Studies have shown that walnuts can significantly reduce blood cholesterol. Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy and elastic. Almonds appear to have a similar effect, resulting in a marked improvement within just four weeks.

Planters NUT-rition Heart Healthy Mix

Fish and omega-3 fatty acids

Research has supported the cholesterol-lowering benefits of eating fatty fish because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids also help the heart in other ways such as reducing blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. In people who have already had heart attacks, fish oil — or omega-3 fatty acids — significantly reduces the risk of sudden death. Doctors recommend eating at least two servings of fish a week. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon.

Nature’s Bounty Omega 3 Fish Oil

Olive oil

Olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol but leave your “good” (HDL) cholesterol untouched. The Food and Drug Administration recommends using about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil a day to get its heart-healthy benefits.

Pompeian Classic 100% Pure Olive Oil

Foods fortified with plant sterols or stanols

Foods are now available that have been fortified with sterols or stanols — substances found in plants that help block the absorption of cholesterol. Margarines, orange juice and yogurt drinks fortified with plant sterols can help reduce LDL cholesterol by more than 10 percent.

Healthy SuperBowl ideas!

Yes the SuperBowl is around the corner. Part of the fun in the experience is eating with family and friends during the game.

As always, the crudite plate with low-fat dipping sauces are always healthier than any of the fried alternative. But eating veggies all night is not fun (or easy) when faced with wings and pizza.

If you plan ahead with healthy snacks, you might stand a chance when faced with temptation. Some other ideas to help you battle your urges to cave in include:

Blue Corn Chips with Flaxseed with salsa are a healthier choice over regular tortilla chips or fried potato chips.

Newman’s Own Organics Pop’s Corn Organic Microwave Popcorn with Light Butter Add parmesan cheese for some fun flavoring

Blue Diamond Whole Almonds are good for you (as long as you don’t over do it) You can always add your own season to spice up these snacks and make it more fun to eat.

And for recipes for healthy SuperBowl dishes check out Eating Well for more ideas.

Using the NuVal measurements to make healthy food choices

NuVal is a system that takes 30 nutrients and 5 nutritional concepts and gives them to 11 of the world’s leading nutritional scientists who then crunch them down in a weighted algorithm that spits out a rating between 1 and 100.

They have a list of some of the top products found in your grocery store that have scored high depending on what type of product it is from cereals, cookies, to frozen vegetables.

The top rated cereal (with a score of 100 out of 100) is the Hodgson Mill Unprocessed Wheat Bran reviewed here by vlrealtor

Sensa - the latest weightloss magic solution?

Sensa is the latest weight loss trick to hit the markets.

As the Sensa website explains, “Sensa merely helps you eat less of the foods you love and gain greater satisfaction from smaller portions.”

Based on the impact of tastants — substances which stimulate the taste buds and therefore enhance feelings of satiety — Sensa allows you to eat the food you already like. You simply feel full faster, and that translates into consuming less calories in the long run.

To use the product:
There are two sides of your Sensa shaker, one for salty and one for sweet. The Tastants marked “Salty” are sprinkled on all foods that you would typically use salt and pepper or a savory seasoning on, like meat, fish, pasta, and most vegetables and starches.
The Tastants marked “Sweet” are sprinkled on sweet foods like fruit, pastries, desserts and cereal. Tastants are sodium-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, MSG-free, and calorie-free! Before you know it, your body is craving less and you’re losing weight!

How Sensa Tastants Work to Make You Feel Full Faster

* Scents from Sensa Tastants travel through your nose to nerve receptors.
* The receptors send signals to the brain that stimulate the olfactory bulb.
* The olfactory bulb, in turn, signals the satiety center in the hypothalamus.
* The hypothalamus sends signals to the pituitary gland that triggers the release of hormones that suppress hunger and appetite.

So, is this just the latest fad or does it really work? I’m curious to see some Expo reviews on it!

I still remember when Hydroxycut was supposed to be the latest and greatest way to lose weight:

The hot diet for today: Pritkin Diet

Another day, another diet plan for you to try. While it may seem a bit much to be bombarded by all these diet books/plan, you do have to realize that not every plan fits every person so it might take a few tries to find the best fit for your body and lifestyle.

Todays popular diet plan is the Pritkin Diet, brought to you by the popular celebrity filled Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa.

Nathan Pritikin, after learning he had heart disease, created a low-fat, high-fiber diet regimen accompanied with exercise that proved advantageous with clean medical reports thereafter. Based on his success, Pritikin introduced his Pritikin Diet, as well as created the Pritikin Longevity Center as a resource for other suffering similar health problems.

The Pritikin Diet is nearly a wholly vegetarian program that is low in cholesterol, nearly void of fat and high in fiber. The Pritikin Diet recommends considerable amounts of whole grain and vegetables. You’ll have about six meals each day with limited serving sizes. There are absolutely no processed grains like white bread or instant rice. Its effectiveness has been documented in more than 100 scientific students.

The program is described in the book, The Pritikin Edge: 10 Essential Ingredients for a Long and Delicious Life. The program’s 10 principles include: eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains; avoid fast-food restaurants and high-calorie beverages; be vigilant about portion control; don’t smoke and eliminate stress.

While the food restrictions are obvious in every diet, the quitting smoking, while implied in other diets, is clearly stated in the Pritkin Diet.

Many people turn to NicoDerm for help in this area. Check out this review by thetrickisto to see if it really works.
