Is losing weight one of you New Year’s Resolutions?

Losing weight, getting in shape, or just being healthier. These are all very popular New Year’s resolutions that many of us will make by the end of the week. An important part of these resolutions is exercise and physical activities.
While some people turn to their Nintendo Wii Fit for their fitness, some of us need even more activity to really get into shape.

Gym memberships are great but they can also be expensive, and in these tough economic times, it might be hard to justify the $60 or so a month for a membership.

I once purchased a machine for my home which came in very handy for the occasions where I just didn’t have time (or the desire) to make it to the gym. You could hop on in the comfort of your home, watch whatever you want on your television, and not have to worry about other people waiting for your machine, how you look, etc….

One downside to exercising in the home alone I did notice was a lack of motivation. Actually making the effort to go to the gym and being surrounded by other like minded people seems to have a positive influence on your workout versus just working out alone at home. The gym can also provide you with more of a variety of a workout. It really does depend on the individual, their preferences, and their geographic and monetary situations.

You can find some great deals on Craigslist and Ebay on machines by people who bought a machine on whim and never used the machine.

Michelle Obama’s Election Day Dress

Michelle Obama is going to be a representative of real beauty as she steps into the role of first lady. Being younger than our most recent first ladies, she can wear looks that they might not have pulled off as easily. Her dresses have already been a source for discussion throughout the race, and for good reason:

Last night, as Obama addressed his supporters and victory at a rally in Chicago, Michelle looked gorgeous in a dress from Narciso Rodriguez’s Spring 2009 collection.

She has also been praised for past fashion decisions such as this dress from White House Black Market she wore on The View:

I personally loved this Maria Pinto Purple Sheath with a black Azzedine Alaïa belt:

We now have 4 years to watch and see not only what Obama will do as President, but what Michelle will wear by his side.

Fake Eyelashes

With Halloween quickly approaching, it’s time to decide on what to be this year. One beauty feature that can help glam up any outfit to full Halloween potential are fake eyelashes. I’ve tried (and failed) at applying them once, but am determined to succeed this Halloween season! I started off with some basic drugstore brands but have friends who swear by the M.A.C. brand.

To perfect the look try following these directions found at E How

Step 1
Decide what look you’re seeking. A full set of false eyelashes adds high drama to your evening appearance or returns the eyelashes that may have disappeared due to illness. Little clumps of fake lashes on the outside corners of your eyes create a subtle, sophisticated glamour.

Step 2
Choose a color that complements the occasion. For evening, stick to black (or dark brown if you have pale lashes), which adds drama without requiring mascara. In the daytime, go dark brown (light brown or blond if you have pale lashes) for a natural look.

Step 3
Check their length. Full lashes should follow the natural line of your own lashes. Trim them with sharp scissors to accommodate your needs.

Step 4
Begin with clean eyes, free of makeup or debris.

Step 5
Hold the lashes in your hand and apply a very thin line of glue or adhesive along the base; let it sit for 1 minute. Begin with a minimal amount of glue, adding more if needed.

Step 6
Look into a mirror, either on the wall or placed on a countertop. Apply the false lashes above your eyelashes, as close to your lash line as possible, following its natural curve.

Step 7
Adjust the lashes with your fingertips, tweezers or a toothpick.

Step 8
If you’re using lash clumps, place them at the outside corners of your upper lashes (one or two per eye should suffice). Adjust their position with a toothpick, fingers or tweezers.

Step 9
Apply eye makeup. You may find your new lashes dramatic enough without mascara, so take a good look in the mirror first.

Good luck! It takes some practice, but they really do enhance your eyes and are totally worth it. Let us know what products you find that work best.

Stick-On Nails

So, I saw these Nail Patches, basically stickers for your nails, at Sephora and thought they seemed a horrible idea. But the line was long, and they were there…
nail
They’re actually not that bad. They actually went on pretty easily. I’ve worn them for a night, a shower and half a day without any smudges or peel-offs or anything odd. The only downside is that for $10, it’s probably more fun to get a real mani.
