Slingbox TV on the iPhone with a 3G blackout

The long-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone went live last night on the App Store for $29.99. Slingbox is a wireless streaming device that takes the signal from a cable, satellite or video recorder and puts it on the Internet, where it can be displayed by a computer with a broadband connection and a password unique to that particular box.

For fear of overloading their network AT&T apparently asked Apple to restrict use of the Slingbox application so connection can only be made over Wi-fi networks.

AT&T’s full statement in response to the 3G Blackout:

“Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.

That said, we don’t restrict users from going to a Web site that lets them view videos. But what our terms and conditions prohibit is the transferring, or slinging, of a TV signal to their personal computer or smartphone.

The Slingbox application for the iPhone runs on WiFi. That’s good news for AT&T’s iPhone 3G customers, who get free WiFi access at our 20,000 owned and operated hot spots in the U.S., including Starbucks, McDonalds, Barnes & Noble, hotels, and airports. AT&T is the industry leader in WiFi.”

The evolution of the Kindle

With the announcement of the newest version of the Kindle, Amazon Kindle DX, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the evolution of the device.

THE KINDLE

The first generation of the Kindle was released November 19, 2007. It can be found at Amazon (new & used) from $257.00. It sold out in 5 hours of its initial offering.
Features include:
a 6-inch display retailed for $399
Just over 1/3 of an inch and 10.3 ounces
Holds over 200 titles
3G wireless allows you to download books right from your Kindle without the hassle of finding Wifi or connecting to a computer.
No monthly wireless bills, service plans, or commitments—we take care of the wireless delivery so you can simply click, buy, and read.
Less than a minute to download a book

Review of the Kindle

THE KINDLE 2

The Kindle 2 was available for purchase on February 23, 2009 for $359. It featured improved battery life on the original with 20 percent faster page-refreshing, and a text-to-speech option to read the text aloud. It’s thickness was reduced from 0.8 to 0.36 inches. It is estimated to hold 1500 books. Unlike the original, Kindle 2 does not have a slot for SD memory cards.

Review of the Kindle 2

KINDLE DX

On May 6, 2009, Amazon announced the newest version of the Kindle, the Kindle DX. It currently retails for $489 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon with an expected release date in the third quarter of 2009. This device seems to be targeted more towards bringing the newspaper readers as well as students who may need a larger screen for their text books.

Features include:
Just over 1/3 of an inch in width and 9.7″ diagonal
18.9 ounces.
Holds up to 3,500 books, periodicals, and documents
Display auto-rotates from portrait to landscape as you turn the device so you can view full-width maps, graphs, tables, and Web pages
Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go
3G wireless
free wireless delivery of books in less than 60 seconds
Read for days without recharging
text-to-speech feature
Over 275,000 books; New York Times Best Sellers and New Releases are only $9.99, unless marked otherwise

With the great success of all these devices, the Kindle is not going away anytime soon. So, it makes you question, what is the next evolution of the Kindle?

New LG monitors get smarter!

LG recently announced its new W53 SMART Monitor Series featuring a few SMART technologies that offer better picture quality, and a feature that helps reduce eyestrain during extended use, with features like a timer that reminds you to take a break from work at predetermined intervals. Another Smart feature includes Auto Brightness that automatically optimizes brightness and other picture settings based on the ambient light in the room and the content being viewed. Another SMART feature is the setting,Cinema Mode, where everything on the screen is blacked out except for the video clip to bring the focus on the content.

LG’s W53 SMART Monitors are available in sizes from 18.5 to 27 inches. Monitors larger than 21.5 inches offer 1920 x 1080p Full HD resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio, making them the perfect fit for Full HD movies and games. The monitors also boast a digital fine contrast ratio of up to 50,000:1 and a 2ms response time.

BlackBerry App World Launched!

RIM Launches BlackBerry application store today, giving BlackBerry owners an easy way to download new applications for their phones. Users can download the new store at mobile.blackberry.com or blackberry.com/appworld.

There’s one other big difference between the BlackBerry and Apple app stores, at least for now: no 99-cent programs. BlackBerry programs are either free, or $2.99 or above.

The App World will be available on all BlackBerrys with track balls, including Pearls, Curves, Flips, Bolds, and 8800 series phones, RIM said.

Some currently featured BlackBerry applications include:
• PrimeTime2Go, a service which lets you download TV programs onto your BlackBerry
• The New York Times
• Oregon Trail, a classic educational game
• Bloomberg News
• WorldMate Live, a travel-management app
• MySpace
• Facebook
• Pandora
• Slacker
• Ticketmaster
• Google Maps
• Viigo, an RSS reader and information app
• Brain Challenge, a puzzle game
• Uno, a classic card game

Skype for the iPhone

According to PC World: Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store today. There has been much-anticipation for the Net-based phone service to be released to Apple’s mobile platform. With the Skype iPhone app, users will be able to make free calls using Wi-Fi to other Skype users as well as use their Skype accounts to make reduced price calls to traditional landline phones. A version for the BlackBerry will be available in May.

Users won’t be able to place calls over cellular networks, only via Wi-Fi. For international callers this means that Skype’s iPhone app will save them money by allowing them to avoid AT&T’s traditional wireless phone network and adds the convenience of allowing Skype users to use their iPhone handset for Skype calls.

Skype for iPhone features five tabs at the bottom of the screen, displaying contacts, chats, a calling panel, call history, and your profile (with Facebook-style status).

Skype for iPhone will use phone numbers directly from your phone’s address book, so no more nasty duplicated contact lists. It even displays your contacts’ photos (if they have one set up on Skype). Conference calling is available, but for the moment you can only take part in one if someone invites you.

Samsung Impression and Magnet

The Impression offers a candy bar design with a large 3.2-inch touch-screen display. Samsung says that the Impression is the first phone in the United States with an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED), which results in a bright and clear screen.

The Magnet has a standard candy bar design in bright orange. The display sits above the large navigation array and full alphabetic keyboard. Features include a camera, a personal organizer, a speakerphone and a camera.
