The International Home & Housewares show is the world’s largest home goods & housewares marketplace, showcasing thousands of new products and designs. It just ended which means we have plenty of new and interesting goodies to learn about.

One interesting product for all the coffee lovers out there is the Hourglass coffeemaker by Hourglass Coffee touted as “the world’s coolest coffeemaker” because brews delicious coffee without heat or electricity and instead uses a patent-pending cold water infusion process to naturally produce low acid coffee that’s smooth and rich with no bitterness.
Ha! get it!? Ok, I enjoyed the play on words.
Lab tests show that coffee brewed in the Hourglass has 69.6% less acid than coffee brewed with traditional hot brew methods. The Hourglass is made from health-safe BPA free plastic from Eastman. The Hourglass is eco-smart and requires no electricity to brew and includes a stainless steel filter that lasts a lifetime. The Hourglass is spill proof, shatterproof and completely portable, making it the perfect coffee maker for travel, college life or brewing on the go.
Once it’s brewed you have something called “coffee extract.” You then heat some water and add two shots of the extract. And then you finally have nice warm less acidic coffee.
The Hourglass is currently being sold in Whole Foods, Kitchen Kaboodle, through Solutions catalog, Hammacher Schlemmer and online at www.hourglasscoffee.com.

According to the Associated Press -
Maytag Corp. is voluntarily recalling about 1.6 million refrigerators due to an electrical problem that could create a fire hazard. The problem has led to 16 incidents ranging from smoke damage to major kitchen damage, Maytag said.
The Newton, Iowa-based company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involves some Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Maytag, Performa by Maytag and Crosley side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators. They were sold from January 2001 through January 2004 at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders.
The refrigerators, which sold for $350 to $1,600, came in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. Those with bottom freezers are not included in the recall.
The recall notice said an electrical failure in the relay component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
Consumers are advised to contact Maytag to find out if their refrigerator is included in the recall and to set up a free in-home repair. Its toll-free number is 866-533-9817.

Consumer Reports recently tested coffee makers in search of the best.
They devised tests to measure brewing temperature because researchers say brewing temperature should be between 195 and 205 degrees for the ideal cup of coffee. Many coffee makers do not get hot enough to extract the best from the beans and avoid a weak or bitter brew.
Consumer Reports tested 34 coffeemakers and found one of the most convenient models that reaches an excellent brew temperature is the programmable Michael Graves 12-Cup Coffeemaker. It’s rated a Consumer Reports Best Buy.

I just got back from a quickie vacation to see my sister-in-law and family. While I was there, she showed me her Cuisinart yogurt and ice cream maker that she got for Christmas from my niece. I’m thinking, “Yeah, yeah, nice gift; not something I’d want…” But then, she whipped out ingredients to make a batch of frozen yogurt. The whole process seemed simple… plop everything into the already chilled bowl; insert the bowl in the machine; turn on. She placed the unit in her laundry room because she said it was noisy, but I can’t say if it was, or wasn’t, since I was in another room. Approximately 30 minutes later, 5 of us were enjoying some pretty tasty (soft) frozen yogurt! In fact, my husband had two ramekin size servings (and he doesn’t EAT frozen yogurt!).
So NOW I’ve changed my mind about this small appliance! I envision creating low-fat tasty treats whenever it strikes me. But am I just kidding myself? Will I really use it, or will it just go to my small appliance graveyard under my cabinet? I mean, I have a bread machine (didn’t EVERYONE get one when they were popular?), and I still use it, although not as much as when it was new. So maybe I WILL use a yogurt/ice cream maker! (Am I trying to talk myself into it?)
I’ve actually been pricing them online, but my first stop will be to look through ExpoTV’s reviews to see how the experts weigh-in! (I suddenly have a hankerin’ for frozen yogurt!) Anyone got any advice on this?

The Daily Green.com recently released some great tips on change to make to your laundry room to make it more green.
* When you have several loads to wash, do them back-to-back so you can use the residual heat in the dryer.
* Run the washing machine only when you have a full load.
* Wash with cold water to save 80 to 90 percent of the energy costs of washing.
* To prevent static cling, add one cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle, using your washing machine’s dispenser. Static cling, by the way, is caused by using synthetic fabrics, so you could also switch to cotton. The vinegar also kills bacteria and prevents the buildup of detergent residue. Remove the laundry before it’s overdried.
* Clean out the dryer’s lint trap after every load to improve circulation and reduce energy use.
* Air dry whenever possible using indoor racks or an outdoor line. This conserves energy—and your clothes. They will not wear out or fade as quickly. (You’ll also save about seven hundred pounds of carbon dioxide over six months of warm weather.)
* Remove clothing from the dryer before the cycle ends and line dry to finish. This conserves energy and increases the life span of the clothing.
* Avoid using dryer sheets to soften fabrics. They often contain harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin. Soften fabric with baking soda in the wash cycle. Try a commercial green fabric softener like Natural Choices Home Safe Products’ Safe ’n Soft, Ecover’s Natural Fabric Softener, or Sun & Earth’s Ultra Fabric Softener.
Another way to consume less energy (and save the environment!) is to look for Energy Star Washers and dryers. For a list of current washers and dryers that are Energy Star approved check out EnergyStar.gov

If you’re looking to buy an affordable juicer, consider the Breville Juice Fountain Compact.
Consumersearch.com is a metareview site that compiles and summarizes reviews from other sources. Their review of juicers found that the high end Breville juicers were rated the best. I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on the high end models so I browsed through the Breville site and found the entry level 200XL.
As you can see in my video review the 200XL chews right through most fruits and vegetables. Some of my favorite fruits are tomatoes, apples, and grapes which all produce prodigious amounts of tasty juice. These can be used to mask the taste of other less palatable vegetables like cabbage. Bananas produce almost no juice. I tried juicing a whole mango the other day and there was a lot of smoke when the pit hit the blades! Fortunately the motor is fine.

I just moved into a new apartment and tossed out my crusty old toaster during the packing process. On a post-move, “OMG let’s buy ALL NEW STUFF!” trip to Target, this shiny red Oster Toaster caught my eye and I had to have it. It was even on sale - $24.99 down from $29.99! I like this toaster because it has slots wide enough for bagels, and I am one of those people who has to have a bagel for breakfast every day. I don’t have the tolerance for toasters that can’t handle a big ol’ bagel. It even has a bagel button! To be honest I’m not sure yet how the “bagel” button differs from the “toast” button…but it’s a neat feature I suppose.

Not to mention how cool this little appliance looks on my new kitchen counter. Just looking at it makes me smile - it looks way better in person than online.

I think everybody loves Ice Cream. If you don’t you’re most likely just kidding because especially in the summer, we all need to cool off. Thing is, if you don’t live in Manhattan, Mr. Softee’s ice cream truck won’t come by your house all the time. So I mean, if I was in that situation I would get an Ice Cream Maker! I think if i had this Cuisinart Automatic Ice Cream Maker I’d probably make really fancy flavors, most likely with peanut butter cups! These reviewers know their stuff about this genius kitchen appliance!
